Over the last couple of years, the Lifemax Foundation has been in constant communication with—and provided Mila to—the EvanjAfrica orphanage in Mozambique, Africa. It is a sad reality that every orphanage in the world is, and will always be, in need of mostly everything. In the case of the EvanjAfrica orphanage, that need was most definitely mattresses. That is, until Lifemax saw an opportunity to step in. Once we saw that the mattresses these beautiful children were sleeping on were old, worn and tattered pieces of foam spilling out of ripped, unclean fabric, we knew we had to do something.

After several long weeks and months of coordinating with Sealy’s global hospitality department (whose production facility is serendipitously located in Orlando, Fl.), sixty dual-sided mattresses featuring Posturepedic elements and a plush feel were locally crafted, and then shipped to the Nampula port in Africa.

The red tape of Customs and the other obstacles along the way were no match for the Lifemax Foundation! With a lot of perseverance and prayer; we were able to get the mattresses out of customs and delivered to the children.

“The great thing about this project was the fact that we not only helped the orphanage, but we also assisted the local economy by ordering and having the mattresses made here in Central Florida,” said Lifemax Founder Sherri Wear. “It was a win-win; we helped the children and the local community at the same time.

We at the Lifemax Foundation will continue to do our part to better the lives of children worldwide, no matter how long the tasks take.

Below is a great thank you letter we received from the orphanage.

Dear Lifemax Family,
Greetings from Africa! We hope that you are all well. We are all well here and filled with joy as we now write this.

We wish that we knew where to start in expressing our immense gratitude to you for the profound gift of 60 mattresses that you donated to our orphanage. The mattresses came to us right when we needed them most.

Our children all came from extreme poverty where they were sleeping on dirt floors and at the mercy of dangerous insects, animals, infection and disease. When they came to the orphanage, they first slept on straw mats, then metal beds, then foam pads, which have now badly deteriorated. It has always been our dream that our children would someday sleep on real, high quality mattresses, which cannot even be found in Mozambique.
When we learned that Lifemax was going to donate and send us top quality mattresses from the U.S., we were overwhelmed by God’s love coming down upon us through you. We cannot thank you enough for this extremely generous donation of the brand new Sealy mattresses and for your tremendous patience with us through all the struggles; we faced getting the mattresses out of the port. We wish you could all have seen in person the looks on the faces of the kids as the truck pulled into the orphanage with the mattresses on top.

Thank you for serving these children who were once “the least of these” and helping us provide them with a truly safe and comfortable place to live, sleep, and thrive. Thank you for your work in the Kingdom of God in serving these children.
Thank you so very much and may the Lord bless you.
Sincerely,
Victor and Christina Carlos
